art contest SPONSORED BY KENMORE KOMICS & GAMES AND IN ASSOCIATION WITH BLUE LINE PRO!

The Akron Comicon is proud to announce the first annual comic book cover contest. This event will take place at the University of Akron on November 10, 2012. Our desire is to provide a fun and educational opportunity to all junior and senior high school art students from the Akron Public School System.

Contest Criteria And Judging

Teachers from each participating school will select two finalists whose work will appear at the convention to be judged by a panel of distinguished artists. The students work will be displayed throughout the one day show and will be judged that afternoon. Three contest winners will be awarded a cash prize of $200 for first place, $100 for second place, and $50 for third place compliments of our sponsor Kenmore Komics & Games.

Each student entry should be a pencil and ink sketch featuring either an original character of your own design or a character already in print (i.e. Spider-Man, Superman etc.) on 11”x17” comic book industry standard blue-line paper provided free of charge from Blue Line Pro and available at Kenmore Komics & Games. The finished product should be in the form of a comic book cover, complete with a title and or logo.

All Finalists must have penciled art work colored for final judging on November 10th 2012. Please have an alternate finalist for each finalist chosen.

As the host, The Akron Comicon will feature several guest artists and writers from the comic profession. They will be available to sign autographs, provide their own art work for sale, critique student portfolios, and judge the art contest. At this time in our planning and execution, we are engaged in communications with several professionals which we plan to announce closer to the date of the convention.

Renowned artist, Joe Staton, will be the first of our three judge panel. Joe has been working extensively for all of the major comic book companies since his start in the industry back in 1971. He has worked on such comic-book icons as Superman, Batman, and Green Lantern to name just a few. He is also the current artist on the world famous Dick Tracy newspaper strip. Joe has suggested and volunteered to conduct a workshop for the students and is open to visiting with the students at their school.

The University of Akron is a great venue for our convention and a great place to showcase the talents of the students in our community. The University is easy to get to, has plenty of free parking, and offers several restaurants within the Student Union where the convention will take place. All finalists and their immediate family will be our guests at the convention. We believe this has the makings for a great family outing!
